Implementation in routine community pharmacy practice

30/01/2023

Community pharmacists play a key role in the self-care of their patients' health, understood as the ability to prevent and manage disease and to maintain or regain a healthy state. Both the WHO and other organisations focus their policies on the promotion of self-care because it optimises human and financial resources, as well as improving health outcomes for the population. Self-care is the recommended course of action for the treatment of minor symptoms.

The Pharmaceutical Indication Service, provided by community pharmacies in a protocolised manner for the treatment of minor symptoms, is a powerful tool in the hands of highly trained professionals who are specialists in medicines and are easily accessible to patients, both for initial contact and for subsequent consultations.

It is essential to address aspects such as knowledge of agreed guidelines and protocols on minor symptoms, referral criteria, service requirements and procedures, medicines and medical devices that can be indicated by the pharmacist, the recording of all actions and their integration with the rest of the professional services that are carried out. And all this from an eminently practical approach that can benefit mainly students who are in the final years of the Degree in Pharmacy.
